ABOUT PCF KINDERGARTEN

In the early 1960s, one of the biggest concerns of the People’s Action Party (PAP) was the social and educational development of Singaporeans and their children. Seeing the need to help children prepare for entry into primary schools, the PAP introduced low-cost kindergartens. Classes were conducted in any available space ranging from ‘wayang’ stages to shop houses. This service soon became popular with parents, leading to more kindergartens being set up over the years. In 1986, the PAP Community Foundation (PCF) was established as the charitable arm of the PAP. All PAP kindergartens were renamed PCF kindergartens. Today, the majority of our Kindergartens are located at HDB void decks and there are currently 237 PCF kindergartens located across the island.

Objectives

PCF Kindergartens aim to prepare every child for formal education which begins with primary school.

Our PCF Kindergartens conduct programmes which aim to meet the desired outcomes of pre-school education as stipulated by MOE. These outcomes are:

  • Know what is right and what is wrong
  • Be willing to share and take turns with others
  • Be able to relate to others
  • Be curious and able to explore
  • Be able to listen and speak with understanding
  • Be comfortable and happy with themselves
  • Have developed physical co-ordination and healthy habits
  • Love their families, friends, teachers and school

Our PCF Programmes

Our kindergartens offer programmes for the following age groups:

Entry Criterion: 30 months or above (at point of entry)

  • Nursery

Entry Criterion: Turn 4 years old (on 1 January)

  • Kindergarten 1

Entry Criterion: Turn 5 years old (on 1 January)

  • Kindergarten 2

Entry Criterion: Turn 6 years old (on 1 January)

Our programmes range from 2hrs to 4hrs daily and the cost of each programme differs accordingly. The school terms are set by the Ministry of Education. There are 4 school terms per year, with each term consisting of 10 weeks. Each academic year begins in January and ends in November. Pupil Registration is open to the public from April - June of each year.

Our programmes are based on MOE's new Pre-school Curriculum Framework that adopts a holistic approach to teaching and learning.

Our programmes emphasize  purposeful play through which children learn:

  • to make choices based on reasoning and problem- solving skills
  • to communicate effectively and be socially adept with peers and adults
  • to be curious about the world and to explore and discover for themselves

Our PCF Teachers

PCF principals and teachers are trained in early childhood education, in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education. All our Principals are at least diploma- trained and many have a degree in early childhood education. PCF ensures that the teachers meet MOE's requirements and provides opportunities for them to upgrade and develop further through scholarships and bursaries.

In recent years, several of our kindergartens and teachers have received MOE Awards for Kindergarten Excellence in the areas of teaching and innovation and we are proud of them.
