Mid-Autumn Celebration and Lantern Making Competition

03 September 2019

On 5 September 2019, children, parents and centre staff of PCF Sparkletots @ Chong Pang Blk 115B came together for a jubilant Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, an event spearheaded by the Parents Support Group (PSG).

Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions and an evening of excitement for children who will be parading with their lanterns. This year, the PSG planned for a lantern-making competition with a twist! Instead of using ready bought materials to create the lantern, children will be using recycled materials. This in line with what we teach our children in class and the competition would reinforce the importance of recycling and doing our part to help the planet.

On the days leading up to the event, our K2 children created posters calling on parents to bring in recyclable materials for the lantern making. The posters were put up at the entrance of every classroom and soon enough we had parents bringing in a wide variety of recyclable materials. The teachers looked through the materials to ensure that all donated materials were safe and appropriate for children’s use and that they were in good condition to be upcycled.

All of our toddlers and children from N1 to K2 and their parents were invited to the celebration held at the centre. On the day of the event, the lantern making station was a hit. As part of parental involvement, we encouraged parents and their child to work together to create a unique lantern for the competition, as it is a great opportunity for family bonding.  We had so many creative and innovative entries as everyone was vying to be the winner! Some parent-child teams brought a modern twist to their lanterns by incorporating pop culture motifs to their lanterns while others took a more traditional approach to it.

It was a fun-filled evening for all and we concluded the evening by taking a stroll around the neighbourhood with our unique handmade lanterns. Both parents and children had such an enjoyable time together creating a lantern that is special to them and asked if they could participate in a similar activity for Mid-Autumn next year.
