“You never get a second chance to create first impressions”- Will Rogers

That was my first thought when I started off in PCF Sparkletots 3 years ago. In my first year of teaching, I received more feedback than praises and acknowledgements. Nevertheless, this did not deter me from improving my pedagogical skills. These feedback gave me the opportunity to reflect on my weaknesses and strengthen my abilities as a teacher. Today, I can proudly say that I was definitely given a second chance to make a lasting impression.

My journey in PCF over the last 3 years has been very enriching and interesting. I experienced and went through the process of applying for SPARK accreditation during my first year of teaching. It was a nerve-wrecking experience for me being a novice teacher. I did not know what to expect and I wondered if I had the capacity to deliver the expectations of a skillful teacher. I was very fortunate that my leader and colleagues were very supportive and they greatly impacted me in my professional development.

I realised that for me to progress in my career, I had to enhance my skills and knowledge. Being a teacher is not about knowing the concepts to be taught but it’s more critical to reflect on how you deliver it effectively and meaningfully. As educators, it’s important for us to be intrinsically motivated to improve ourselves, as much as refining our resources, strategies and techniques. Through the professional development activities, I learnt to be open-minded to accept constructive feedback and suggestions.

I focused on the skills that I needed to acquire to be able to teach and develop the children holistically. All the trainings that I received benefitted the children under my care.  I was able to enhance my skills by attending courses and applying the skills that I learnt in the classroom. This opened my spectrum in working and guiding children who had learning difficulties. The contentment was seeing the children progress well and receiving appreciation from parents. This further motivated me to reflect and review my teaching practises consistently.

All the hard work paid off when I was promoted to a Teacher II. This title opened doors of opportunities and learning for me. Moving from a novice teacher to a mentor was a rewarding experience. I attended the training on Mentoring for Novice Teachers and was given the opportunity to guide and impart my knowledge and skills to my fellow colleagues. Serving as a mentor brought many challenges and returns, however the act of helping someone develop, grow was incredibly rewarding.

In an environment where ‘Teamwork’ is important, I learnt to plan, delegate and work together with my colleagues in improving the quality of the centre. Mentoring presented me with an avenue to constantly progress as I readily availed myself to guide my mentees. My evolution wouldn’t have been possible without the rich learning experiences in my professional development journey.
