Japanese Pan-Fried Gyoza

Running out of snack ideas for the snack monsters at home? Try this recipe for delicious Japanese pan-fried gyoza filled with meat and vegetables that will please everyone at home. You can also challenge your children to use chopsticks to pick up the gyozas, developing their fine motor skills while enjoying a snack! 🥟🥢

Serves: 6 servings

Ingredients:

Gyoza Filling
200g minced chicken
¾ cup cabbage, chopped
½ cup onions, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
5-8 shiitake mushrooms, diced
1 ½ tablespoon Japanese soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
A dash of black pepper

Dipping sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon Japanese soy sauce
A dash of togarashi powder (chilli flakes), optional

To cook
26 gyoza or dumpling skins
Cooking oil (with Healthier Choice Symbol)
¼ cup water
1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions:
1.Prepare the gyoza filling by mixing minced chicken, cabbage, mushrooms, onions and garlic in a mixing bowl till well mixed.
2.Add soy sauce, sesame oil and black pepper to the mixture and mix well.
3.Prepare the dipping sauce by mixing the rice vinegar, soy sauce and togarashi powder together till well mixed.
4.To prepare the gyoza, scoop 1 tablespoon of the filling onto the middle of the gyoza skin.
5.Dip one finger into a bowl of water and encircle the edge of the gyoza skin.
6.Using your thumb and index fingers, gently pleat the gyoza skin from the sides to the centre of the gyoza to enclose the filling.
7.Heat up cooking oil in a non-stick pan.
8.Fry the gyoza (with the side facing down) for 2-3 minutes over medium heat until the bottom turns golden brown.
9.Pour in ¼ cup of water and simmer with the lid on until the water completely dries up.
10.Turn off heat and drizzle 1 teaspoon of sesame oil around the sides of the pan
11.Transfer the gyoza onto a plate and serve with dipping sauce.
