With the ever-changing digital landscape, new programmes, apps and devices are being introduced all the time. It is our duty as parents and educators to help our children learn concepts of healthy use of technology. Technology can be a great tool to help children learn in fun and engaging ways when used in moderation.
Here are some tips to help develop better digital habits for your children:
• Striking a balance
As with many things, it is important to strike a balance between spending time online and offline. Parents should limit the time children spend on digital devices and encourage playtime to stimulate a child’s creativity and to develop their social skills.
• Be a good role model for children
Parents should set a good example by reducing the usage of mobile devices in front of their children. Demonstrating mindful use of technology is the best way to teach children the importance of healthy digital habits. The way, parents can also spend more time engaging with their children through meaningful conversations and interactive board games and activities.
• Avoid using technology to manage children’s emotion
Children need to be taught how to recognise and handle their own emotions. Instead of distracting them with technology when they are upset, calm them by talking to them or sharing jokes to make them laugh.
• Understand the value of face-to face communication and set boundaries
Establish rules for tech-free times and spaces. For example, mobile devices are not allowed to be used in the dining room or bedrooms during meal times or before bedtime. This would create opportunities for quality family time and bonding.
