Visiting Elderly Friends from Fei Yue Senior Citizens Home

08 September 2019

As educators, it is important that children are guided to become confident and creative learners with a caring heart. With that in mind, PCF Sparkletots @ Bukit Batok Blk 206 rolled out a community outreach programme with the Fei Yue Senior Citizens Home to nurture children with values such as empathy, respect and compassion for others.

The programme started in 2016 and our Sparkletots children from N2 to K2 would visit the elderly regularly and during festive periods such as Chinese New Year and Christmas. Through these visits, children were able to develop an intellectual understanding of what compassion is and the role it can play in their lives.

The young and old would take part in a series of activities that are designed to promote bonding. Some of the activities include playing games, singing, dancing, crafting and exercising together. During the most recent visit, the children and elderly had a fun-filled morning with a Zumba session followed by some sport games with the elderly. Everyone had so much fun and were looking forward to the next visit!

This program brought about many benefits for both the young and old. The little ones brought a new sense of vibrancy and fun to the centre and the elderly while the children were given more opportunities to develop their social skills, and learn how to show appreciation and compassion towards the elderly in the community.

After familiarising themselves with the environment and the elderly, children would often ask about their next visit and brainstorm about the activities they would like to do with the elderly. The children were also more attentive to the elderly’s needs over time and would greet them whenever they see them around. The union of future and past generations bring value to both the children and elderly and we look forward to create more of such opportunities to connect with our community.
